Community Engagement and Mobilization

Funded by the EPA Office of Water, E2I2 developed a methodology to improve the structure and content of public hearings, the setting of environmental priorities and the process of consultation with community members that included disenfranchised, diverse voices. This process involved the development of a survey mechanism, directed and focused educational materials, a series of workshops, and case studies.

The project resulted in the involvement of low-income and racial minority communities in environmental planning and policy making within their communities.

Community Assessment, Education, and Training

Funded by the North American Association for Environmental Education, we provided technical environmental education in the East End of Newport News in conjunction with the C. Waldo Scott Center for H.O.P.E. Workshops and activities expanded the capacity of residents to participate effectively in community decision making.

In the Blackwell Community in Richmond, VA, E2I2 conducted a complete community environmental investigation and risk assessment. Subsequently, we conducted a community training on pollution prevention and improving indoor air quality in homes.

In collaboration with Virginia Union University, Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project, Inc. and Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation, E2I2 co-sponsored a series of community-based environmental justice conferences and Brownfields workshops across Virginia.

In Newport News East End, Virginia E2I2 conducted a community assessment on indoor and outdoor air pollution, followed subsequently by community education on pollution prevention and mitigation.

E2I2 developed and piloted a 5-week Youth Computer Academy for disadvantaged youth from the East End of Newport News, Virginia. This environmentally focused workshop provided hands-on access to cutting edge technology with GIS GPS familiarization, and other skills-building activities.
