Our Impact

Mapping Environmental Justice Data from 1994 to 2024

E2I2 leading a workshop at Hampton University in 1996
In 1994, the Environmental Equity Information Institute began as a center for community-based environmental justice data, research, and education at Hampton University, an HBCU in Hampton, Virginia.

Our founding  grew directly from early activism against environmental racism and a groundbreaking body of Black academic scholarship documenting environmental injustice in the U.S.

Simultaneously, our approach to mapping and data analysis has become more advanced.

E2I2 uses geographic information systems (GIS)-based tools to create maps that visualize social, environmental, and health inequities. Use the slider to view how GIS-mapping has changed.

Since 2023, E2I2 has expanded from 5 to 20 partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs) and learning institutions in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Delaware.

Our team collaborates with CBOs to deliver customized data literacy training, hands-on technical assistance, and citizen science tools that residents use to track air quality, document environmental health impacts, build evidence for advocacy campaigns, and hold polluters accountable.

E2I2’s work reflects our community’s voice while providing data in an easy-to-understand way. They are helping us bridge the gap between science and lived experience, with the ultimate goal of helping our community residents see how environmental data connects to daily life and overall community health.
